History of Father's Day
While families have faithfully celebrated Father's Day each June,
for decades, the history of this day has some info hard to pin down.
Some say the first Father's Day was celebrated with a service con-
ducted in a West Virginia church in 1908. Organized by Dr. Robert
Webb. Held in the Central Church of Fairmont. Others say the idea
for it began gathering steam in Spokane, Washington. Sparked by
Sonora Smart Dodd. Who is formally credited with it.
Here's what's been passed down for decades:
It was a Mother's Day Sunday. And the minister of Sonora's church
Central Methodist Espiscopal in Spokane, Washington, was delivering
an inspired sermon on mothers. The importance of giving them the
respect, honor and love they deserved. And as Sonora sat engrossed
in this inspiring sermon, she began to think about the possibily of
paying tribute to her father. In short, Sonora wanted a special day
dedicated to William Jackson Smart.
Why did Sonora believe a day should be set aside to honor her
father?
After Sonora's mother died, William Smart single handedly brought up
his family of six. On a rural farm in eastern Washington, Smart - a
Civil War Veteran - worked selflessly bringing up his brood. He was
widowed when his wife died giving birth to their sixth child.
As an adult, Sonora began to realize - more and more - just how
selfless her father had been. In fact, the many sacrifices he'd made
for them still resonated within her. Still touched by his personal
sacrifices, courage and unconditional love, Sonora wanted a day
set aside on which to pay tribute to the man she considered
the perfect father.
Inspired by the minister's Mother's Day sermon, she approached the
minister. Wanting to discuss the possibility of having a service
dedicated to her father. To be held on June 5th, his birthday.
Unfortunately the minister was busy. And unable to hold a
dedication to her father on that particular day. Instead, two weeks
later, on June 19th - he said a few words of tibute to mark the
occasion. And from then on, June 19th was considered Father's Day
in the state of Washington.
To further honor her father, and thinking it important to honor all
fathers, Sonora began wearing a red rose to pay tribute to all living
fathers; a white rose for those deceased. And on June 19th each year,
she and other women gathered both red and white roses together to
be organized around the church.
It wasn't long before states and groups were lobbying Congress to
declare June 19th an annual Father's Day. In 1913 a bill to make it
a formal day of observance was introduced. While U.S. president
Woodrow Wilson approved of the observance, it wasn't until 1924
that Calvin Coolidge made it a nationally recognized event. A day
on which to "establish more intimate relations between fathers and
their children and to impress upon fathers the full measure of their
obligations".
In 1926 a National Father's Day Committee was formed in New
York City to further organize and lobby for it's formal inclusion
as a holiday.
However it took another 16 years before U.S. president Richard
Nixon established it as a formal holiday. (Although history also
suggests in 1966 President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential
proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of June as Father's Day.
Affirming it as an official national holiday.)
While Dr. Robert Webb was considered to have organized the first
church service celebrating fathers in 1908, it was through the
superior efforts of Sonora Smart Dodd, which made it possible to
acquire national recognition for the day. And - in time - the white
rose she chose to honor fathers who were deceased, the red rose
to express thankfulness to a living one, were accepted as flowers
symbolizing each group.
